Are you experiencing lower back pain and heavy/painful periods? Are you Black? If so, have you heard of fibroids?
What are Fibroids?

Fibroids are described as muscle cells and other tissues that grow in and around the wall of the uterus, or womb. It affects an estimated 20% to 50% of women in their reproductive ages, most of whom are African American. Unfortunately, a large portion of the population is unaware of or uninformed about it. This leads to possible reproductive issues and untreated pains both during and after menstruation.

What are the symptoms?
Symptoms include:
- heavy/painful periods
- bleeding between periods
- feeling “full” in the lower abdomen
- urinating often
- feeling pain during sex
- lower back pain
- reproductive problems like early labor, infertility, or multiple miscarriages.
It is currently unknown what causes fibroids, or why it predominantly affects Black women. Studies suggest genetics and prolonged exposure to estrogen may increase the risk of developing fibroids. Other risks include a family history of fibroids, obesity, high amounts of red meat in diet, and high blood pressure.
Treatments
There are common treatments outside of a full hysterectomy, and they include:
- Medications
- Contraceptive pills and progestational agents
- GnRH agonists (Lupron)
- Intrauterine devices (IUD)
- Myomectomy
- Uterine artery embolization (UAE)

Thanks for offering holistic options. Sometimes it seems like prescription medication is the only route but I am afraid to damage my liver.
